Abdominoplasty in Barcelona

Abdominoplasty in Barcelona is considered when the skin and fat of the abdomen have stopped responding to diet and exercise, almost always after pregnancies or after losing a lot of weight. It is major surgery with a permanent scar, and it is best decided knowing what it involves. This page dwells on the operation step by step and on the scar; the general summary of the treatment has its own page: abdominoplasty.

Abdominoplasty in Barcelona · Clínica EGOS

What is it and who is it for?

It is the surgery that removes the excess skin and fat from the abdomen and tightens the muscles; it is not a substitute for losing weight. The ASPS asks for good health, stable weight and realistic expectations, and recalls that it is done for yourself, not to fit an ideal image. The decision between mini and full, and the timing after childbirth, are covered on our abdominoplasty in Madrid page.

Your first abdominoplasty consultation in Barcelona

The surgeon examines your abdomen, assesses the skin, the fat and the abdominal wall, takes photographs and goes over your history and previous operations. You can book it at whichever clinic is most convenient: we see patients for consultations at all five, and going does not commit you to surgery.

The operation step by step

What follows combines what the ASPS and the SECPRE describe with what we do at EGOS. The order is the usual one; the details are decided by the surgeon in each case.

The anaesthesia

At EGOS we operate under general anaesthesia. It is not the only possibility: the ASPS also cites intravenous sedation, and the SECPRE allows local anaesthesia with sedation in some cases, above all in the mini and in liposuction of the abdomen. The final choice is made with the anaesthetist, depending on your health and the type of operation.

The incision

In the full version, the cut is horizontal and sits in the lower abdomen: the ASPS places it between the pubic hairline and the navel, and the SECPRE describes it as running from one hip to the other, just above the pubic area. Its shape and length depend on the skin that is left over. To remove skin from the upper part, a second incision around the navel may be made.

The muscles and the skin

The skin of the abdomen is lifted up to the ribs and the muscle wall is repaired: the weakened muscles are tightened and joined with stitches in the midline, which gives a narrower waist and a firmer wall, according to the SECPRE. The skin is then pulled down, like a window blind, and the excess is trimmed.

The navel and closing up

A new opening is made for the navel, which is brought out to the surface and fixed in position, according to the ASPS. In the mini there is no need to go around it, and the SECPRE adds that it may end up slightly lower when the skin is pulled. The incisions are closed with stitches, adhesives, tapes or clips, and a dressing is applied.

Drains, stay and duration

Thin tubes may be left under the skin for a while to drain the fluid that builds up, something mentioned by both the ASPS and the SECPRE. The procedure lasts about three hours and the rest afterwards is two days; the SECPRE adds that discharge may come after a few hours or after two or three days in the clinic, depending on how extensive the surgery was.

The scar: how it develops

The scar is the price of this operation, and it is better to face it from the start. The SECPRE describes it as permanent, of variable length depending on what needs correcting, and notes that the ones around the navel and in the lower abdomen improve over time.

You need patience. The SECPRE warns that during the first three to six months the scar may look worse than it will end up, and that it does not fully settle until nine to twelve months have passed; the ASPS speaks of several months to a year. At EGOS the improvement is seen gradually at 1, 3, 6 and 12 months.

If you had a caesarean, the ASPS explains that the scar from then may be incorporated into the new one. What you do while it heals also counts: the ASPS insists that the incisions must not be subjected to force, swelling, rubbing or movement during healing, so follow the instructions about the girdle and effort to the letter.

The first weeks, in three sentences

You will wear a girdle for four to eight weeks, and it is a good idea to walk early. As a rule, people go back to work after two or three weeks, depending on the person. We ask you to wait three months before doing physical effort, exercise or sport, and at the check-ups the surgeon tells you when to go back.

The price of an abdominoplasty in Barcelona: what the quote should say

Every abdomen needs a different operation, and a mini is not quoted in the same way as a full one or a full one with liposuction. That is why the figure arrives in writing after we have seen you, with fees, operating theatre, anaesthesia, stay, girdle and check-ups, each item separate. We give it to you in writing, itemised.

Frequently asked questions

How much does abdominoplasty cost in Barcelona and what does the quote include?

It depends on the type of abdominoplasty, on the operations that are added, on the anaesthesia and on the stay. After the assessment at the clinic you choose, you receive a written quote that separates fees, operating theatre, anaesthesia, stay, girdle and check-ups.

Can I get pregnant after an abdominoplasty?

You can, but it is not advisable. The ASPS recommends postponing the operation for anyone who plans to have more children, and the SECPRE explains that pregnancy can slacken again the muscles that were tightened. The prudent course is to have the operation once the family is complete.

Is a hospital stay needed, what anaesthesia is used and are drains fitted?

At EGOS the anaesthesia is general. You may be left with temporary drains. The SECPRE explains that, if the surgery is extensive, you spend two or three days in the clinic and, if not, discharge comes after a few hours; in your case the medical team decides.

Can I have the operation if I smoke?

The usual course is to stop smoking beforehand. The ASPS includes not smoking in the candidate profile, the SECPRE asks you to stop some weeks beforehand because it delays healing, and at EGOS we ask you for three weeks before and another three after.

Is recovery from an abdominoplasty painful?

There is discomfort, above all at the start: the SECPRE speaks of a swollen abdomen that may hurt and of pain that is controlled with medication. If something worries you before the next check-up, call the clinic instead of trying remedies on your own.

At which of the five clinics in Barcelona do I book the first appointment?

At whichever suits you best: Balmes, Aribau, Guinardó, Madrazo or Poblenou. Any will do; you can book by telephone (switchboard: +34 932 71 80 69) or by email, at info@clinicaegos.com.
