What is liposuction in Barcelona, and what is it not?

It is a contouring operation: it suctions the fat from a specific area to refine the silhouette, and the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) makes clear that it does not treat obesity. You can find the general guide on the liposuction page of our website.

Lipo, lipo sculpting, lipo 360 or mini lipo: what each name means

The names you see in adverts and search engines almost always describe the same operation with nuances. "Lipo sculpting" is used when, besides removing fat, the aim is to define the musculature or the contour of the area. "Lipo 360" refers to the whole waist: abdomen, flanks and lower back. "Mini lipo" means the area is small.

These are commercial labels, not medical categories with a fixed definition. That is why it matters less what it is called and more which areas are treated, which technique is used and how much fat is removed, something that can only be decided after you have been examined.

Techniques and areas

The fat can be suctioned with the classic technique, with laser or with ultrasound (VASER lipo); at the assessment we explain which one we suggest for you and why.

Women and men

We go over what you are looking for, your health and your previous operations, the areas are examined and photographs are taken. Bring any medical reports you have.

Before the date and on the day of the operation

You may be asked for blood tests and changes to your medication, and to stop smoking. The operation takes place in an operating theatre; the medical team chooses between general or regional anaesthesia, and the time depends on the areas and the technique.

When you go home the same day, someone you trust must take you, wait for you and spend the first night with you.

Who operates on you for liposuction in Barcelona, and where?

You are operated on by registered plastic surgeons of Clínica EGOS. Before you book a date, we tell you in writing who will operate on you, with their registration number with the medical association, and at which centre, with its health registration number.

The specialty can be checked in the State Register of Healthcare Professionals (Registro Estatal de Profesionales Sanitarios), and membership of the medical association in the Spanish Medical Association (Organización Médica Colegial). Healthcare centres in Catalonia are listed in the Generalitat's register. According to the ASPS, it is carried out in an accredited surgical centre or else in a hospital.

Recovery, compression garment and massages

For the first few weeks you wear a bandage or compression garment, there is bruising and swelling, and the surgeon tells you when you can go back to work and when gentle exercise can begin. If you are recommended lymphatic drainage or massages, it should be because the medical team has prescribed them, not out of habit.

Results: when you see them and what happens ten years later

The swelling can take months to go down, and the final contour gradually takes shape as it subsides. Two weeks after your operation it is still too early to judge the result.

The fat cells that are removed do not come back. The remaining ones can grow larger if you put on weight, and skin becomes less firm with age in every body. Ten years on, what will have changed you most is your life, not the operation; even so, according to the ASPS, most of the improvement is maintained if your weight does not change, although there is no figure that applies to everyone.

When liposuction alone is not enough

Liposuction removes fat, not skin. If excess skin predominates or the abdomen is distended, the surgeon may suggest an abdominoplasty instead of liposuction, or together with it.

The suctioned fat can be reused in another area: this is lipotransfer. Each operation added prolongs the anaesthesia and the recovery, and it is not always worth it; it is decided at the examination.

Follow-up after liposuction: what it should include

The operation does not end when you leave the operating theatre. Before deciding, ask how many check-ups there are, when they take place, who carries them out and where, whether the compression garment and dressings are included, and what happens if a touch-up is needed.

The first appointments are for removing the drains, checking the incisions and adjusting the garment. Attend all of them, even if you feel fine: that is where you see how the area is progressing.

Comparing figures from different clinics is of little use if you do not know what each one includes. That is why we prefer not to give an amount before examining you: it depends on how many areas are treated, the technique, the anaesthesia and whether another procedure is added.

Insist on a written, itemised quote that covers fees, operating theatre, anaesthesia, materials, compression garment and check-ups. And ask what would happen if a touch-up were needed.
