A breast lift (mastopexy) in Zaragoza is the operation that restores height and firmness to a breast that has dropped, and it is considered after pregnancies, weight loss or simply with the passing of the years. This page explains it in order and without beating about the bush: which degrees of sagging exist and which technique suits each one, how the scar heals, how much truth there is in the idea that breastfeeding makes the breast sag, which words you will hear in the consultation and what the quote includes.

The first assessment for your breast lift in Zaragoza takes place at our clinic in the Delicias district.
The essentials fit into five ideas. First: a breast lift raises the breast, it does not enlarge it. Second: the technique depends on how far the breast has dropped and how much skin is left over. Third: the scar is permanent, although it gradually fades. Fourth: if you become pregnant afterwards, part of the improvement may be lost. Fifth: the quote reaches you in writing after the examination, because there is no single figure that is valid for everyone. The rest of the page goes into the points that raise the most doubts.
A breast lift (mastopexy) is breast-raising surgery: it removes excess skin, tightens the tissue surrounding the breast and, if the areola has grown over the years, can reduce it. What it aims to correct is specific: nipples that, without a bra, sit below the fold or point downwards, an elongated and slack breast, a widened areola or one breast that is lower than the other. The operation is not designed to gain or lose sizes, and that is the first thing worth clarifying in the consultation.
Surgeons measure the drop, known as ptosis, using the fold under the breast as a reference. The best-known scale is Regnault's, which was used, according to a study of 132 women published in Annals of Plastic Surgery in 2010, to classify the degree of ptosis in each patient.
In the first degree, the nipple sits level with the fold. In the second, it is below the fold but still above the lowest point of the gland. In the third, the nipple sits at the lowest point and faces downwards. Sometimes something different happens: the gland has dropped and yet the nipple keeps its height, and this is called pseudoptosis. To find out which degree you are, look at yourself in profile without a bra and note where the nipple sits in relation to the fold; this is only a guide, because the degree is set by the surgeon at the examination.
That grading guides the technique. According to the Spanish society of plastic surgery (SECPRE), in a small breast with little sagging an incision around the areola may be enough. As a general rule, moderate sagging usually calls for a vertical line as well, and marked sagging for the full inverted-T incision. The periareolar scar outlines the edge of the areola and is the most discreet, but also the one that allows the least skin to be removed; the vertical one adds a line down to the fold and the inverted-T adds a line along it.
The scar is permanent, but it changes over time: during the first year it improves in appearance at the first, third, sixth and twelfth month, and at the beginning it is pink. We ask you not to expose it to direct sun for at least six months.
The American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) recommends waiting until you have had all the children you want: the changes that pregnancy causes in the breast can cancel out the improvement, wholly or partly. SECPRE states that there is no risk of a breast lift affecting future pregnancies, but that the breasts may sag somewhat again with a new one.
It is worth dispelling a very widespread idea: that breastfeeding is what makes the breast sag. In that same study of 132 patients, 85 % of those who had had at least one pregnancy noticed adverse changes in the shape of the breast afterwards, but a history of breastfeeding was not among the significant factors for ptosis. Age, a higher body mass index, a larger bra cup size, number of pregnancies, smoking and a history of weight loss of more than 50 pounds (about 23 kilos) were.
Breastfeeding after a breast lift is possible in many cases, but not always. If breastfeeding is part of your plans, say so from the first visit: sometimes the most sensible thing is to wait, and at other times the technique can be chosen with that in mind.
According to the ASPS, the people who are a good fit are those who are healthy, keep a stable weight, do not smoke and are uncomfortable with the change in their breast. There is no minimum or maximum age as long as you are healthy; it is advisable that breast development has finished, which usually happens around the age of 18.
If you have enough volume, the lift alone is sufficient; if contents are lacking, the surgeon explains the options. The implant, its size and its placement are covered in breast augmentation in Zaragoza.
It is carried out in an operating theatre, under general anaesthesia or, in straightforward cases, local anaesthesia with sedation, and when it is finished the breast is protected with dressings and supported by a special bra or an elastic band. Full recovery takes four to six weeks, without heavy loads or intense exertion, and the final result takes between three and six months to be fully seen. To maintain it, we recommend a suitable bra for sport, moisturising and protecting the skin from the sun, and avoiding tobacco. For the remaining steps, the preparation and the guidelines, see the mastopexy page.
We do not give a figure before examining you: it depends on the degree of sagging, the technique, whether an implant is added, the anaesthesia and the overnight stay, and whether another surgery is combined with it. The ASPS lists the items that make up the cost: surgeon's fees, anaesthesia, the surgical facility, medical tests, post-operative garments and medication. Ask for them to be itemised separately and in writing, and compare them line by line. We give it to you in writing, itemised.
These words are heard in any breast lift consultation, and it is worth understanding them. Ptosis is the drop of the breast. The inframammary fold is the line where the breast joins the chest, and it serves as the reference for measuring the sagging. The areola is the dark area surrounding the nipple. The gland is the breast tissue proper, and the flap is a portion of tissue that is moved along with its blood supply in order to reshape. The periareolar incision goes around the areola; the vertical one runs down from it to the fold; and the inverted-T adds a line along the fold. Talking with the same words as the surgeon makes the consultation far more useful.
Those who assess you are registered plastic surgeons at Clínica EGOS; they examine you and explain which technique and which degree of lift they propose for your breast.
Before you book a date, we tell you in writing who will operate on you, with their registration number with the medical association, and at which centre, with its health registration number.

It depends on the degree of sagging, the technique, whether an implant is added, the anaesthesia and the overnight stay. Before examining you we cannot give a figure; the quote reaches you in writing at the first visit, with each item listed separately.
Look at yourself in profile without a bra and see where the nipple sits in relation to the fold under the breast: level with the fold is mild sagging, below it is moderate, and at the lowest point of the breast and facing downwards is marked. It is a guide; the degree is set by the surgeon at the examination.
It can reduce or reverse the improvement, according to the ASPS, because of the changes that pregnancy causes in the breast. SECPRE adds that a breast lift does not affect future pregnancies, although the breasts may sag somewhat again.
In many cases yes, but not always. If breastfeeding is part of your plans, tell the surgeon before deciding: sometimes it is better to wait, and the technique can be chosen with that in mind.
It improves progressively during the first year, and every skin heals at its own pace; it is permanent. Protecting it from the sun and following the dressings you are given helps.
The examination decides it: how much volume is left, how far the breast has dropped and what size you want. If the volume is enough for you, a lift alone is enough; if contents are lacking in the upper part, the surgeon explains the options.
