Is there enough fat? How the technique is chosen

According to the ASPS, the method is chosen on the basis of several things: the size and shape of your buttocks, how much fat you have available to obtain by liposuction, what you are looking for and how active you are, and what your skin is like. With your own fat, the starting point is obvious: with no fat to move there is no augmentation possible.

That is why the consultation opens with a practical question: where would it come from? If there are clear donor areas, such as the abdomen, flanks, back or thighs, there is something to work with. If the body is very slim, the change possible is modest and the surgeon will say so frankly. And mind the skin: grafting gives volume but does not remove what is left over, something the ASPS reserves for another operation, the buttock lift. How much of the fat stays and when is the result seen?

According to the ASPS, patients retain on average between 60% and 80% of the fat transferred, somewhat more or somewhat less depending on the case: the body reabsorbs part of it. That is why the volume in the first week is not the final one. At EGOS the shape can be seen well between three and six months, once the swelling goes down; the ASPS places the final result at around a year, because the fat takes time to take.

That fat behaves like fat anywhere else in your body: it grows if you put on weight and shrinks if you lose it. Hence the ASPS makes how long the result lasts depend on keeping your weight and staying fit.

Buttocks and liposuction: using the fat to define the figure

As the fat comes from other areas, the same operation can be used to define the figure. The ASPS indicates that liposuction is sometimes added for better contouring, and at EGOS we talk about the waist, the outer thighs and the lower part of the thighs as areas that can be reshaped. According to the ASPS, the surgeon may remove up to three times as much fat as will end up being injected, because not all of it is usable. Which areas to treat, and how many, is decided at the consultation, and the number of areas affects the quote.
