What is a breast implant replacement?

Breast implant replacement is a surgical procedure where previously placed implants are replaced with new ones, either for medical or aesthetic reasons or due to prolonged use of the previous implants. This surgery is a crucial part of breast augmentation treatments, helping to ensure the long-term safety, comfort, and satisfaction of patients.

How is a breast implant replacement procedure performed?

At EGOS, the procedure is performed under general anesthesia or intravenous sedation. The first step is making an incision to access the implant, which can be located under the armpit, around the areola, beneath the breast fold, or, in rare cases, through the belly button. These incisions are typically the same as those used in the initial implant surgery. Depending on the type of implant, the patient’s scar tissue, and whether a simple replacement or breast remodeling is needed, the procedure may vary. When removing the implant, the surgeon may also need to remove scar tissue. If the implant isn’t being replaced, excess skin may be removed, or the breast tissue may be tightened to improve the overall appearance. When replacing the implant, the new one is placed, and the incision is closed. In some cases, drains may be used to remove fluid or blood during the initial days of recovery.

Who is a good candidate for breast Implant replacement?

The decision to remove or replace breast implants can arise for various reasons, both medical and aesthetic. In some cases, it’s necessary due to complications or the degradation of the implants. In other instances, patients may choose to replace their implants for personal reasons, seeking results that better align with their aesthetic goals and self-esteem.

Over time, implants can develop complications like silent ruptures, capsular contracture (which causes hardening and pain), or changes in shape and position that result in asymmetry. Infections or necrosis may require urgent removal, and implants may interfere with breast screening tests. Although rare, there is a risk of breast implant-associated anaplastic large cell lymphoma (BIA-ALCL), so periodic medical checkups are recommended.

Preoperative Tests for Surgery:

The preoperative process ensures a safe procedure and includes:

  • First consultation at EGOS: To evaluate the patient’s goals and expectations.
  • Review of current implants: To assess the type, size, and condition of the implants.
  • Breast health assessment: A mammogram or other breast health assessments may be required.
  • Selection of new implants: To discuss available options based on preferences and body type.
  • Cessation of smoking and medications: To promote better healing.
  • Follow-up plan: To monitor recovery and address any concerns.

Postoperative care for surgery:

Postoperative care for breast implant replacement requires a short recovery period. Common side effects like bruising, swelling, and mild pain can be alleviated with prescribed medications. It is essential to wear supportive bras, similar to sports bras, to keep the dressings in place. Stretching exercises and lymphatic massages can help prevent stiffness. Intense physical activity should be avoided for about one month, but daily activities can generally be resumed after 3 to 4 days.

Breast implant replacement is an important decision for many women. Over the years, implants can lose their shape or be affected by the body’s natural aging process, hormonal changes, or simply by the patient’s personal preferences. The most important thing in these cases is to evaluate each situation individually, as what is suitable for one person may not be appropriate for another.

I’ve noticed that many patients choose to undergo implant replacement for various reasons: from wanting a size that better fits their current lifestyle, to issues such as implant wear or complications like capsular contracture. The latter is one of the most common reasons I encounter in consultations. The key is to maintain proper follow-up of the implants over the years to ensure everything remains in good condition.

One of the most rewarding aspects of breast implant replacement is that we not only address an existing issue, but we often have the opportunity to improve the original aesthetic result. Sometimes, the first procedure didn’t achieve the balance or shape the patient was hoping for, and with a replacement, we can refine symmetry or achieve the desired projection. Advances in current surgical techniques allow for much more natural-looking results.

The first thing I tell my patients is that, beyond the aesthetic aspects, it’s essential to have regular check-ups to monitor the condition of their implants. Over time, implants can deteriorate, and although it’s not always visible to the naked eye, they may need to be replaced to avoid complications. My recommendation is that patients consult with their surgeon regularly, especially after the 10-year mark from the initial implant.

Many women choose to undergo breast implant replacement surgery simply because their preferences have changed. I’ve had patients who, after several years, opt for a smaller size or a more natural look. The body and personal tastes evolve over time, and that’s completely normal. My role is to support the patient through that transition and ensure she feels happy and confident with her new appearance.

One of the current advantages of breast implant replacement is that the techniques have advanced significantly compared to those used years ago. Today, we can perform the procedure in a much less invasive way, with shorter recovery times and minimal scarring. This is great news for patients considering a replacement who may be concerned about the surgical process.

When a patient decides to replace her implants, one of the most common questions is about the right type of implant. Nowadays, there are multiple options available, including cohesive gel implants that offer a more natural appearance. My approach is always to listen carefully to the patient’s expectations and explain the pros and cons of each option, so she can make an informed decision.
