What is Septoplasty?
Septoplasty is a surgery that corrects deviations or alterations of the nasal septum, the structure that divides the two nasal passages. When this septum is deviated, it can cause difficulty breathing, snoring, recurrent sinus infections, or even headaches. The goal of this procedure is not aesthetic but functional: to improve the patient’s quality of life by allowing normal airflow.
What does septoplasty involve?
During the operation, the surgeon accesses the septum through the inside of the nose, leaving no external scars. Once there, the cartilage and bone are reshaped or repositioned so that the airflow becomes wider and more balanced.
The procedure usually lasts about one hour and, in most cases, the patient can return home the same day. Initial recovery is relatively quick, although complete healing may take several months.
Main indications
Septoplasty is recommended when the patient presents with:
- Persistent nasal obstruction
- Chronic or recurrent sinusitis
- Frequent nosebleeds related to the deviation
- Difficulty sleeping due to snoring or apnea
Conclusion on septoplasty
Septoplasty is much more than a functional surgery: it can restore the patient’s ability to breathe and significantly improve quality of life. And when combined with rhinoplasty, both the aesthetic and functional results are enhanced, achieving a harmonious and healthy nose.
Septoplasty vs. Rhinoplasty: Differences
Septoplasty focuses on function, while rhinoplasty aims to improve the external shape of the nose. However, in many cases both procedures are performed together, in what is known as septorhinoplasty.
- Septoplasty: corrects the septum to improve breathing
- Rhinoplasty: reshapes the external appearance of the nose
- Septorhinoplasty: combines both goals, achieving a more aesthetic nose without compromising respiratory function
In fact, to achieve a complete result, it is common for the surgeon to evaluate the need to combine both interventions. This ensures that the patient not only improves outwardly but also breathes better internally.
