Breast reduction

Breast reduction is a surgical technique that allows you to decrease the size of the breasts, reaching breasts smaller, firm and provided with the rest of the body. It is usually done for aesthetic improvement but it also allows to relieve physical problems such as back pain and shoulder. A chest with excessive volume can interfere with many activities and cause major discomfort.

Duración de la intervención

The intervention is always performed in an operating room under general anesthesia. It lasts between 2 to 4 hours and hospitalization is required even though the patient may receive discharge in the same day or 24/48 hours after the procedure.

Description of the technique

Intervention serves to reshape breasts and give them a harmonious form according to the patient’s anatomy. A few incisions, which usually have the form of anchor, setting a downward vertical line from the areola and a horizontal line in the submammary furrow are. The areola attached to its blood vessels and nerves in the majority of cases will be preserved.

Recovery period

Breastfeeding is possible, although there is a risk not to be able to do so if the breast reduction is very large. We do not recommend the intervention if it is planning to breast-feed.

The sensitivity of the nipple-areola complex can be saved. During the first weeks the sensitivity will be reduced, usually temporarily. Sometimes this insensitivity may be permanent.

The results in this type of interventions are not immediate. You can refer to the months following the intervention. Approximately from 6 to 7 months moms already have a definite shape. This type of operation leaves a few permanent scars, although with the passage of time are will be felt less and less. Directed healing reduces risk of keloids and hypertrophic scars.

The return to normal is around 48 – 72 hours. It is recommended during this time and until after about 3 – 4 weeks the patient do not make great efforts as well as limited physical exercise to a full recovery.
