Children and adolescents may sometimes experience social difficulties due to having developed prominent ears. Ear cosmetic surgery (otoplasty), which is one of the few procedures performed on children and adolescents as well as adults, aims to address this aesthetic issue through a simple operation that corrects the position and shape of the ears.
What is otoplasty?
Otoplasty is a surgical procedure that corrects prominent ears or "protruding ears." The operation is simple, although the patient is always given mild sedation and local anesthesia to ensure they feel no discomfort.
Ideal candidates for otoplasty
By the age of 4, the ear's outer structure is already fully formed with all its folds, making it possible to evaluate any defects and consider surgery. From the age of 6 or 7, children begin to place importance on physical appearance and may start to hear unpleasant comments that could affect their academic performance. At this age, children are also able to understand the procedure and cooperate with the postoperative care. Ears can be operated on at any age and the results are generally excellent, but otoplasty is most commonly performed between the ages of 6 and 14, as it helps prevent teasing and emotional discomfort at school. In addition, adults both men and women can undergo this procedure without any issues.
What Is the procedure like?
Once you've decided to move forward, we will arrange all necessary preoperative tests to check for skin hypersensitivity, allergies, or clotting disorders. After reviewing all the results, the procedure itself is simple and quick. A small incision is made behind the ear to reach the area with the curvature or deformity. Then, sutures made of special material are placed to naturally fold the ear, correcting the deformity. The patient typically remains under observation for about 2–3 hours and can go home afterward. The results are immediate, and postoperative discomfort is minimal.
Following the procedure, and to ensure proper healing, the surgeon will place an orthopedic headband to keep the sutures in place. This helps immobilize the ears and maintain their new shape. The headband should be worn for at least two weeks. Depending on the type of otoplasty, a compressive bandage may also be applied for the first 24–48 hours to prevent bleeding. After the observation period is complete, the patient will be discharged and can go home following a personalized consultation with one of our medical specialists, who will provide instructions on at-home care and prescribed medication.
