Is it bad to have surgery in summer? Does heat affect healing? Is there a higher risk of infection? How long do you have to wait to go to the beach or the pool after aesthetic surgery?
These are some of the most common questions patients ask during consultations when they are considering a procedure during the summer months. To answer them, our plastic surgeons Santiago Elvira and Tiago Gomes, founders of Clínica EGOS, took part as experts in a recent story published by OKDIARIO on the main myths about aesthetic surgery in summer.
The surgeons' conclusion is clear: summer, on its own, is not a contraindication for aesthetic surgery. The medical indication, the planning of the procedure and compliance with postoperative recommendations are far more relevant factors than the time of year.
Having surgery in summer: is it really more dangerous?
One of the main reasons some people postpone an aesthetic operation until September is the belief that high temperatures can increase complications.
However, according to Dr. Elvira and Dr. Gomes, no season of the year, by itself, determines the success or failure of aesthetic surgery.
Each patient must be assessed individually, taking into account their health, the type of procedure, their personal circumstances and their ability to follow the medical instructions properly during recovery.
The real challenge is taking care of the postoperative period
The problem is not necessarily that surgery takes place in summer, but failing to follow the recommendations during recovery.
Holidays, trips, the beach, the pool, sport or sun exposure may be part of summer plans, but after surgery these activities need to be adapted to the recovery process.
The patient's commitment to the postoperative period is a fundamental part of the process.
“The real mistake is not having surgery in summer; the real mistake is thinking that, because you are on holiday, the postoperative period goes on holiday too”.

Their participation focuses on a key point: there is no universally perfect time of year to have aesthetic surgery.
